To measure the weight of a body without making mistakes, the instrument must be hung on a rigid surface (such as the ceiling), kept stationary and in a vertical position, without being tilted during reading. The body whose weight you want to know must be hooked to the other free end.
The older mechanical devices with spring equipped with a graduated scale express the value obtained in Kilogram weight, Newton or dyne.
In digital instruments, on the other hand, the intensity of the force is calculated using the same principle but the value is displayed directly on an LED or LCD display.
The working principle of dynamometer (mechanical or computerized) is based on Hooke’s law, according to which the elongation of an elastic body, due to the effect of gravitational attraction, is directly proportional to the applied force. Therefore, the more tension is exerted on the spring, the greater its deformation will be.
