What are the properties of breast milk ?
In breast milk, potassium, sodium, calcium are free ions and other minerals are available as complex compounds. Although its iron content is low (0.2-0.8 mg per 100 ml), its bioavailability is high. The absorption of zinc in breast milk is also high.
The baby’s sucking stimulates milk production, allowing the mother to secrete more milk. Breastfeeding should be started within the first half-hour after birth. The frequency of breastfeeding should be adjusted according to the wishes of the baby in the first month and no hourly schedule should be applied. Breastfeeding can be continued for 1-2 years or until spontaneously cut from the breast, provided that the child receives other essential nutrients.
