What is Heimlich Maneuver used for ? How does Heimlich Maneuver work ?
The purpose of the Heimlich Maneuver, one of the most important first aid practices known, is to remove any object that has escaped into the windpipe by applying pressure to the abdominal cavity. As a result of something left in the throat, the windpipe can be blocked. In this case, applying the Heimlich maneuver quickly can be life-saving.
Choking incidents due to an object getting into the trachea are very common emergency events in adults and especially children. The trachea can be blocked due to children taking objects that are too big and hard to swallow or because we try to breathe or talk while eating. In such cases, if the body does not come out by coughing, the most effective method to be applied is to remove the hard body from the trachea with the Heimlich maneuver.
The Heimlich maneuver is applied in different ways to unconscious people, unconscious people, babies and ourselves.
